JUAN SANTAMARÍA AIRPORT IS CLASSIFIED AMONG THE BEST IN THE WORLD
It's third worldwide in the category of less than five million passengers per year.
International Airport Juan Santamaría was classified as the third best worldwide, in the category of less than five million passengers per year, and as number four of all airports on the American continent, in all categories. That declaration was made by the International Association of Air Transport, on their annual report of surveys to passengers, disclosed last Monday. Al Romeu, General Manager of Alterra Costa Rica, expressed satisfaction by the acknowledgment given to Juan Santamaría Airport, and that those results are evidence that they are heading in the right direction. The representative said that, as third best airport in the world, Juan Santamaría will receive public recognition during the Asia world conference, to be held the coming month of October in Lisbon, Portugal.
Beware of the person who tried to steal the errand
Se robó el mandado. This is a Costa Rican expression, or dicho, that is applied to people who can't be trusted.
Literally it means "he stole the errand I asked him to do." The expression says something about the way we Costa Ricans behave toward one another in our daily lives.
To give you an example: Costa Ricans are not direct or blunt people, but are rather shy and deferential. I might ask Juan, for example, to ask Maria if she would like to dance with me. But the expression se robó el mandado applies if Juan goes to Maria and asks her for a dance rather than communicating my wish to dance with her. So I am out of luck, and Juan stole the favor (or errand, mandado) I asked him to do.
Of course in old Costa Rica this was considered very bad form and would have meant a serious breach of confidence. Juan would quickly gain a reputation in the community that he can not be trusted because se robó el mandado.
It's all about politeness and insecurity. Costa Ricans do not handle rejection well (but then, who does?). They would prefer to be turned down in an easy way. For example, an applicant for a position would like to hear that he was the very next one in line even if this is not true because it appears as though he had a shot, and at least he wasn't as bad as the last guy, even if only three people applied for the same position.
The same holds true when a Costa Rican finds himself in the position of having to say "No." It is almost impossible for him or her to do it. They will answer with a question or give an excuse, but never say NO flat out. It appears to us as impolite and might hurt someone's feelings, but more important, it could close a door and you never know when you may need a favor from this person
I think we who have to learn a different language should be aware of this expression se robó el mandado because sometimes, if we must use a translator, they have some power that we don't have and they could withhold information from us either to protect us, or to use it later to "steal our favor." So let's remain aware and the next time someone tries to robarse el mandado, we can say no way José: Que va chichi.
U.S., Costa Rica Reach Trade Pact

The Bush administration reached an agreement yesterday with Costa Rica that would allow that nation to join four of its neighbors in creating a Central American Free Trade Area with the United States.
The deal must be approved by Congress.
The agreement came after two weeks of intense negotiations aimed at overcoming differences in such areas as telecommunications and insurance that had prompted Costa Rica to back out at the last minute from completing the CAFTA talks last month with the four other nations, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras.
Administration officials said they were pleased with the market-opening language finally reached with Costa Rica, which had sought to protect its monopoly operations in telephones and insurance.
Costa Rica agreed to fully open its insurance market to foreign competition by 2011. It also agreed to open three key sectors of its telephone market to competition -- wireless services, private network services and Internet services.
While the country will maintain bans against foreign competition in other areas of telecommunications, U.S. negotiators said they were satisfied that they had torn down barriers in the areas of most interest to U.S. companies.
"Costa Rica needed a little more time to complete its participation in CAFTA, and we're very pleased it has joined its Central American neighbors in this cutting-edge, modern free trade agreement," U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick said in a statement.
